Behind the Lens: How I Photograph the Fairfield Fireworks Every Year

Every summer, thousands of families gather along the shoreline to experience one of Fairfield's most anticipated traditions—the annual Fairfield Fireworks. Blankets cover the beach, children run through the sand, friends reconnect, and as the sun disappears below the horizon, everyone turns their eyes toward the sky.

For me, however, the evening looks a little different.

While everyone else is enjoying the spectacular display, I'm focused on preserving it.

This year I once again had the privilege of photographing the Fairfield Fireworks, and I am incredibly grateful to have been trusted with documenting such an iconic community event. It is one of my favorite assignments every year because it combines technical photography, planning, creativity, and storytelling into a single evening.

Fireworks Photography Is Much More Than Pressing the Shutter

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that photographing fireworks is easy.

The reality is quite the opposite.

Unlike portraits or landscapes where I can choose the exact moment to take a photograph, fireworks are completely unpredictable. Every burst is unique.

Some explode larger than expected.

Some drift with the wind.

Some overlap one another.

Some disappear before reaching their full bloom.

Every launch creates a completely different image.

There are no second chances.

Timing Is Everything

A fireworks shell may only last a few seconds from launch to full explosion.

During that brief moment I have to:

  • Predict where it will bloom.
  • Choose the proper exposure.
  • Decide how long to leave the shutter open.
  • Prevent the image from becoming overexposed.
  • Avoid capturing unwanted smoke that quickly fills the sky.
  • Anticipate the next explosion before it even happens.

It requires experience, patience, and hundreds of split-second decisions throughout the show.

Why My Gallery Looks Different

If you've ever looked through one of my Fairfield Fireworks galleries, you may notice something interesting.

The majority of the gallery contains authentic photographs exactly as they were captured throughout the evening.

Every image represents a real moment during the fireworks display.

But at the very end of the gallery you'll usually find three to five special images.

These are composite photographs.

What Is a Composite?

A composite is not a "fake" fireworks display.

Instead, it is an artistic image created by combining several of the strongest individual fireworks from different moments of the same show into one final photograph.

Why?

Because no single explosion can showcase everything that happened during the entire performance.

Imagine watching a 25-minute fireworks show.

Your memory isn't based on just one burst.

It's a collection of dozens of incredible moments.

The composite image recreates that feeling.

It represents the entire experience rather than a single fraction of a second.

Every firework included in the composite was photographed during the actual Fairfield Fireworks celebration—it simply allows viewers to appreciate multiple spectacular moments in one dramatic image.

Why I Include Both

I believe it's important to tell the complete story.

That's why I always provide both:

  • The authentic individual photographs captured throughout the evening.
  • A handful of artistic composite images that celebrate the very best moments of the show.

This allows everyone to experience the event in two different ways:

First, exactly as it happened.

Then, as a work of photographic art.

More Than Just Fireworks

One of my favorite parts of the evening isn't actually the fireworks themselves.

It's watching Fairfield come together.

Families laughing on the beach.

Friends sharing picnics.

Children pointing toward the sky with excitement.

Couples enjoying a beautiful summer night by the water.

These moments are just as important as the explosions overhead because they tell the story of our community.

Photography isn't only about documenting what happened.

It's about preserving how it felt.

Thank You, Fairfield

I'm honored each year to photograph one of Fairfield's signature events. Being trusted to document memories that thousands of residents will look back on is something I never take for granted.

Whether I'm photographing community celebrations, family portraits, branding sessions, weddings, or special events, my goal is always the same—to create images that people will treasure for years to come.

If you attended this year's Fairfield Fireworks and happened to see me with my camera, thank you for being part of another unforgettable evening.

I look forward to seeing everyone again next summer.
