Celebrating New Beginnings | A Fairfield Front Porch Portrait Session with the Smith Family

One of the things I love most about being a family photographer is that every session tells a different story.

When I pulled up to the Smith family's home in Fairfield, I was immediately welcomed with smiles, easy conversation, and one incredibly friendly dog who seemed convinced he was just as important as everyone else in the portraits. Looking back at the photographs now, I think he might have been right.

We decided to photograph the family right in front of their home.

I always encourage families to consider meaningful locations instead of simply choosing a pretty backdrop. Years from now, they'll remember far more than the outfits they wore. They'll remember this house—the place where everyday life happened, where holidays were celebrated, where neighbors became friends, and where countless memories were made.

As we talked between photographs, I learned this wasn't just another family portrait session.

It was also a celebration of an exciting new chapter for Maya Smith.

Maya recently became the Head of School and Lead Teacher at Housatonic River Montessori School (HRMS), a role that reflects both her passion for education and years of dedication to children and their families.

What impressed me most wasn't simply her résumé, although it's certainly an impressive one. Maya's connection to Montessori education began when she was a child herself. Today she's also the proud parent of an HRMS graduate, giving her a unique perspective as both an educator and a parent.

She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Special Education. Before entering the classroom, she served as a legal advocate for children with disabilities in New York City, helping families navigate educational services and ensuring children received the support they deserved.

In 2020, Maya joined HRMS as an Assistant Teacher. She later earned her Montessori Lead Teacher certification and, through hard work, commitment, and a genuine love for teaching, became the school's Head of School.

Listening to her talk about education, it became obvious that this isn't simply a career for her—it's something she truly believes in.

The portrait session itself felt effortless. We laughed, talked, and enjoyed a beautiful afternoon while creating photographs that felt relaxed and genuine. Their wonderful dog made several appearances, occasionally stealing everyone's attention, but somehow making the photographs even better.

Those are the moments I love most.

After photographing families for so many years throughout Fairfield County, I've learned that the strongest portraits aren't created through perfect poses. They're created through real conversations, genuine laughter, and allowing families to simply enjoy being together.

By the end of the session, it felt less like I had photographed clients and more like I had spent time with people I'd known for years.

Congratulations, Maya, on becoming the Head of School at HRMS. The students, families, and teachers are incredibly fortunate to have someone with your experience, compassion, and dedication leading the school into its next chapter.

And to the entire Smith family—thank you for welcoming me to your home. It was a privilege to photograph your family in front of a place that already holds so many wonderful memories. I have no doubt there are many more to come.
