How to Get the Best Possible Images from Your Family Photo Shoot

As a professional photographer with over 30 years of experience, I’ve seen it all—from perfectly executed family portraits to chaotic sessions where little things derail the shoot. The difference between a good photo and a great one often comes down to preparation.

Whether you’re booking a session for holiday cards, a milestone celebration, or just to capture your family’s current chapter, here are my top 5 Do’s and 5 Don’ts to ensure you get stunning, timeless images.

✅ 5 Do’s for a Flawless Family Photo Shoot

1. DO Plan Outfits Thoughtfully (But Not Too Matchy-Matchy)

Coordinated outfits look polished, but avoid being overly uniform (e.g., everyone in white shirts and jeans). Instead, choose a color palette (2-3 main colors + neutrals) and mix textures (knits, denim, lace) for depth. Avoid loud patterns that distract.

2. DO Schedule Around the Best Light

Natural light is your friend. Golden hour (1-2 hours after sunrise or before sunset) provides soft, flattering light. If indoors, position near large windows. Avoid harsh midday sun, which creates unflattering shadows.

3. DO Bring Snacks, Water, and Small Distractions (For Kids & Pets)

A hungry or bored child can turn a session sour quickly. Pack quiet, non-messy snacks (fruit snacks, crackers) and a favorite toy to coax natural smiles. For pets, bring treats and a leash for controlled shots.

4. DO Communicate with Your Photographer Ahead of Time

Share your vision! Do you prefer candid moments or posed portraits? Any must-have groupings? The more your photographer knows, the better they can tailor the session to your style.

5. DO Relax and Have Fun

The best photos happen when families are authentic. Play, laugh, and interact naturally—your photographer will capture the magic in between poses.

❌ 5 Don’ts That Can Ruin Your Family Photos

1. DON’T Leave Haircuts or Outfit Shopping to the Last Minute

A fresh haircut the day before can look awkward. Schedule trims 1-2 weeks prior. Same goes for outfits—try everything on in advance to avoid fit issues or missing pieces.

2. DON’T Over-Pose or Force Smiles

Stiff, unnatural poses = stiff, unnatural photos. Instead of saying "Say cheese!", ask kids to whisper their favorite dessert or tell a joke. Genuine laughter beats forced smiles every time.

3. DON’T Ignore the Background & Location

A cluttered or distracting setting takes focus away from your family. If shooting at home, tidy up key areas. Outdoors? Scout locations with simple, clean backdrops (open fields, neutral walls).

4. DON’T Arrive Rushed or Stressed

Running late puts everyone on edge. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to settle kids, touch up hair/makeup, and get comfortable before the camera starts clicking.

5. DON’T Forget to Trust Your Photographer

You hired a pro for a reason! If they suggest an angle, pose, or location, trust their expertise. Some of the best shots come from unexpected setups.
