More Than a Cap and Gown: How to Prepare for Your 2026 Graduation Session
The countdown is officially on! With the blossoms starting to pop across Connecticut, the Class of 2026 is entering the home stretch. Whether you’re walking across the stage at Fairfield University, Sacred Heart University, or graduating from one of our local high schools, your graduation portraits are about more than just a diploma—they’re a celebration of your hard work and the memories you’ve made.
To make sure your session is as seamless and stunning as possible, I’ve put together the ultimate prep guide. Here’s how to level up your shoot from "standard" to "standout."
1. Timing is Everything: Chasing the Golden Hour
In photography, lighting is our best friend. For those iconic shots in front of Bellarmine Hall or the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, we want to avoid the harsh, squint-inducing midday sun.
- The Magic Window: Aim for "Golden Hour"—the 60 to 90 minutes before sunset. This provides a soft, warm glow that makes every skin tone look incredible.
- Campus Specifics: At Fairfield U, the light hits the quad beautifully in the late afternoon. At SHU, the modern architecture provides great reflective surfaces that look best when the sun is lower in the sky.
2. The "Under the Gown" Strategy
While the gown is the star of the show, what you wear underneath matters for comfort and silhouette.
- Fabric Choice: Graduation gowns are notorious for trapping heat. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.
- Necklines: If you want your outfit to show, choose a V-neck or a button-down. If you want a clean look, go with a scoop neck that sits below the gown’s collar.
- The Shoe Factor: You’ll likely be walking across lawns and up stone steps. Shoes matter more than you think! If you’re wearing heels, bring a pair of flats or flip-flops to commute between locations. For the guys, make sure those dress shoes are polished—they will be in the frame.
3. Personalize with Meaningful Props
Your graduation session should tell your story. Don’t be afraid to bring items that define your journey:
- The Essentials: Kente cloths, stoles, and decorated caps.
- The Fun Stuff: A bottle of champagne (for that classic "pop" photo), your sports jersey, or even your musical instrument.
- Four-Legged Friends: Yes, family pets are always welcome! Nothing captures a student’s personality quite like a photo with their best furry friend.
