Think you don't look good in pictures? You aren't alone. Fairfield photographer Dariusz Terepka explains why being "photogenic" is a myth and how professional direction at his Connecticut studio transforms your confidence and your portraits.
The Myth of Being "Photogenic"
“I’m not photogenic.”
“I don’t look good in pictures.”
These are, without question, the two most common things people say to me before stepping in front of my camera. And after years of photographing people from all walks of life across Fairfield County, I can say this with absolute confidence: it’s almost never true.
What people usually mean is that they’ve never liked how they looked in past photos. That doesn’t mean they aren’t photogenic—it means they were never guided, never positioned with intention, and never photographed by someone who truly knew how to see them.
The Secret to Looking Natural in Headshots and Portraits
No one who comes to my studio is a model—and they don’t need to be. A great photograph isn’t about modeling; it’s about comfort, direction, and trust. When you work with the right photographer, something changes. You stop worrying about how you look, and you start enjoying the experience. That’s when real confidence appears, and confidence always photographs well.
My role as a professional photographer is to guide you through the entire process. I give direction constantly—how to stand, where to place your hands, how to angle your body, when to move, and when to pause. These aren’t stiff poses; they’re natural adjustments that bring out your best features without forcing anything that doesn’t feel like you.
A Professional Eye: Finding Your Best Angle Fast
To do that well, I have to work fast. Sometimes in less than ten minutes, I need to understand how you move, how you hold yourself, and what angles flatter you most. I do this by seeing my subjects through what I call loving eyes—trained eyes that look for the strongest, most honest version of the person in front of me.
This ability comes from 30 years of experience and training. Whether I am shooting in my Fairfield studio or on-location in Westport or Greenwich, I’ve developed techniques to identify light, angles, and expressions that make people look confident, approachable, and real. Often, the smallest changes—an adjustment of the chin, a shift in the shoulders, a relaxed breath—can completely transform the result.
Experience the Difference at Best In CT
