Photographing Mateo Bocelli at the Levitt Pavilion in Westport: A Night of Music, Atmosphere, and Storytelling
There are some assignments that stay with you long after you've packed away your cameras. Covering Matteo Bocelli for the Westport Journal at the Levitt Pavilion in Westport, Connecticut, was one of those evenings.
It was one of those classic New England summer nights—warm, beautifully humid, and filled with anticipation as people gathered under the open sky for an unforgettable performance. The Levitt Pavilion has long been one of Fairfield County's most treasured outdoor venues, and on this night it provided the perfect setting for an artist whose music is as elegant as it is powerful.
As a photographer, concerts present a unique challenge. The lighting changes constantly. Expressions last only fractions of a second. Every movement on stage creates a new opportunity—or a missed one. Success comes from anticipating the next moment rather than reacting to it.
Mateo Bocelli delivered a performance that combined grace, passion, and incredible musicianship. Throughout the evening, the audience was completely engaged, creating an atmosphere that was just as rewarding to photograph as the performance itself. My goal wasn't simply to document the concert—it was to preserve the feeling of being there.
Working with the Westport Journal allows me to document many of the events that make our community so special. From concerts and festivals to nonprofit fundraisers and civic celebrations, each assignment is another opportunity to tell the story of Fairfield County through photography.
One of the aspects I enjoy most about event photography is capturing the moments between the moments. A smile exchanged with the audience. The concentration before a song begins. The emotion reflected in the stage lights. These are often the photographs that help people relive an evening years later.
